Geological provinces viewer

A regular 1:1,000,000 grid slices the Earth evenly, but not meaningfully. This is the other partition: 921 geological provinces, each with its own type, last orogeny and crust type. Colour them by any attribute, then click one — it is named and picked out, and its conjugate (the province it was joined to before rifting) is picked out too, half-lit, on the other side of the ocean.

Provinces. 921 polygons compiled from published regional syntheses; each carries its own bibliographic reference in the source data. Attributes: province type, last orogeny, continent, crust type, province group, and up to two conjugate provinces.

Conjugates. A conjugate is the province that sat against this one before the two were rifted apart — the Gabon Belt against the São Francisco Craton, the Kaoka Belt against the Nico Pérez Terrane. 56 conjugate relations are declared; 51 resolve to a polygon in this dataset, 5 name provinces that are not mapped here yet.

Known limitations. Working draft, not audited: 921 features carry 913 distinct ids and 899 distinct names, so some polygons are duplicated or share a name. Boundaries are as digitised in the source compilations, at inconsistent scales and with no topological cleaning between neighbouring provinces.

Projections. Globe and world map are both drawn from the same equirectangular (plate carrée) raster, so a province occupies the same latitudes and longitudes in either view. Base map: NASA Blue Marble.
